If you're a beginner poet, start with a short Haiku. Haiku verse is a form of Japanese poetry consisting of 3 lines in 5-7-5 format. That means the first line must be 5 syllables, the second line 7 syllables, and the third line once again 5 syllables. It usually has nature or the seasons as its theme, but it doesn't have to. Write about anything you'd like! If I'm low on inspiration I surf the net for a neat photo and use it as my inspiration for my Haiku. Here's an example of a simple Haiku:
Sally ran so fast --->(5 syllables)
that she fell and skinned her knee --->(7 syllables)
now cry, Sally cry. --->(5 syllables)
If you're looking for a variation, there's Tanka which can be 5-7-5-7-5 or 5-7-5-7-7.
Another simple poem for beginners, Rhyming Couplets. It's a poem consisting of sets of two lines that rhyme with each other. Here is one of my poems for example:
or filled with cheery song
I wouldn't like it to be terse
nor sappy with romantic verse
It need not be an epic tome
so I'll write about a simple poem ~

Today I'd like to write a poem
It need not be longor filled with cheery song
I wouldn't like it to be terse

Then of course there's Free Verse. Free Verse poetry has no structure or rhyming schemes which sometimes makes it difficult for the beginning poet. When you are writing your free verse poem just keep in mind that poetry often has to do with the human condition, meaning it touches on things that affect us all - like love, etc. Here's one of my Free Verse poems for example:
Seasons
it began one sunny afternoonwith a wish and a promise
a simple joy
like running barefoot o’er grassy hills
you grabbed my wrists
and we spun and spun
until everything was out of focus
but you
gradually, like ebb and flow
came the push and pull
promises broke under the strain
the sun began to fade
and the parts of me caught up in you
like roots tangled deep in the earth
began to wither
then one day I grabbed your wrists
and began to spin
but you felt cold and pulled away
with a tear running down your cheek
if that's what you want
then go to the one
who's waiting o’er those grassy hills
and let me be
you may have moved on
as naturally as the seasons change
but it isn't that simple for me ~
